Donald "Donnie" Gillis

1944-2026

Donald "Donnie" Gillis

It is with deep sorrow and massive love that the family of Donald "Donnie" Desmond Gillis announces his peaceful passing on the evening of June 23, 2026, at the age of 82.  As with most of his life, he was surrounded by family, love, and laughter.  PEI will dearly miss its beloved farmer, trucker, equine enthusiast, and gifted storyteller.

Donnie was born on June 16, 1944, to the late Daniel and Margaret (née Fitzsimmons) Gillis, in Norboro, PEI. Alongside his siblings, the late Jimmy Gillis, the late Eugene Gillis, the late Phyllis and Austin Curley, the late John (Eunice) Gillis, the late Carl (Susie) Gillis, and Arlita (Jim) Hickey, he was raised with a deep love for animals, farming, family, and friendship. Donnie also learned the value of hard work early in life, a quality that stayed with him well into his later years, and he passed it down to his own kids and grandkids.

At the age of 21 in 1965, Donnie married the love of his life, Elizabeth "Betty" Gallant. Together, they built a beautiful life in Norboro, raising their five children: Glen (Tammy), Doug (Trina), Terry (Vicki), Shane (Crystal), and Lori (Eric). His unwavering love, guidance, and pride in his children never faltered. He cherished each of them deeply, and they, in turn, made him incredibly proud.

Grampy will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Kourtney (Rylan), Tanner, Sydney (Jordan), Daniel (Jessica), Allison (Tyson), Tyson (Cheryl), the late Emma, Jordan (Grace), Kendra (Darcy), Tyson (Meaghan), Denver, Parker, and Luke. His great-grandsons, Emmett and Bryden, will miss their special visits filled with laughter and joy.

Known for his quick wit, humour, and endless, sometimes embarrassing, stories recalled with remarkable detail, he created lasting memories with each grandchild. They always felt his love, devotion, and presence, as he was there for every outing, milestone, event, graduation, and birthday.

Donnie had a special gift for connection. He never forgot a face and could strike up a conversation with anyone, often finding family ties no matter how distant. His warmth, charm, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Donnie and Betty seldom had an empty house. The door was always open, and he made sure Mother (Betty) always had coffee ready for visitors.

As Donnie leaves this world, we take comfort in imagining him welcomed with open arms by those who went before him, along with his grand-pups Rosie and Ernie, his herding dogs Keisha and Lexie, and many race and heavy horses.

"To live in the hearts of those we love is never to die."

You will forever remain in our hearts. You have created such a beautiful family. We know it’s not possible for you to love us more!

Donations may be made in Donnie’s memory to the International Children’s Memorial Place. Family Flowers only.
