Mary Ethel Johnston
1952-2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary Ethel Johnston (Lafford) on June 23, 2026, at home and surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on April 30, 1952, in Sydney, Cape Breton, Mary was the beloved daughter of John and Hertha (Foster) Lafford.
Mary was the wife of Jim Johnston (Jr.), with whom she shared 50 years of love and partnership. She was the proud mother of Dr. J.D. Johnston (Dr. Saija Kontulainen, Finland) and NP Sheena Lindsay Johnston (Richard Booker, United Kingdom), and the adoring grandmother of Gracie Isla Booker, who brought endless joy and pride to her life.
A lifelong believer in the value of education, Mary pursued learning with dedication and purpose. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, a Bachelor of Education, a Certificate in Inclusive Education, and a Certificate in Gerontology, becoming the first graduate of that program. She used her knowledge to help others, always seeking ways to support, encourage, and uplift those around her.
Mary had a special gift for caring for people. She opened her home and her heart to seniors in need of additional care and to individuals living with intellectual disabilities. She offered not only assistance, but dignity, friendship, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. She treated people like family, celebrated their strengths, and helped them grow with patience, understanding, and compassion.
Those who knew Mary will remember her big heart and her willingness to help anyone in need. She had a wonderful sense of humour and could brighten even the most difficult day. Whether sharing a story, a joke, or simply enjoying time with family and friends, Mary had a way of making people feel welcome and at ease. She could light up a room without ever trying.
Mary's family and friends will miss her deeply, but they will carry forward the kindness, strength, and love she shared throughout her life.
Visitation will be held at the Davison Funeral Home Kensington on Sunday June 28th from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. A funeral service and reception will be held at Kensington United Church on Monday June 29th at 2:00 p.m. to celebrate Mary's life and to share memories with family and friends.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the many health care professionals across Prince Edward Island who supported Mary throughout her illness, in particular the staff of East Prince Home Care and Dr. Coetzee. The compassion, kindness, and dedication exhibited by all brought comfort not only to Mary but to her entire family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Community Hospital O'Leary.
