Edith King MacLeod

1930-2014

Edith King MacLeod

Edith King MacLeod of Graham’s Road passed away on Sept 14, 2014 at the Prince County Hospital. With her passing, Edith has taken her musical talents to a higher level as she joins the choir of heavenly angels as organist and choir director.

Edith was born in Florence, Cape Breton, the daughter of Edward and Peggy (Wallace) King.  She attended school in Florence and Sydney Mines before enrolling at Mount Allison University when she was just 16. During the summers of her university years, she was employed at the Keltic Lodge. She graduated with her Licentiate of Music in 1949 and she still has great pride in her alma mater. It was a special day when her grandson Ray graduated from Mt A in May of 2012.

After graduation, Edith moved to PEI to teach music in several rural schools. For 33 years, she taught music and later history as well, and retired from Kensington Int’Sr High School in 1990. Edith was organist and choir director at New London United Church until it closed after giving 44 years of service. At the time of her death, she was organist and choir director at Kensington Presbyterian Church.

Edith was involved in her community and was an active member of the Graham’s Road Women’s Institute and the New London United Church Women, of which she was a life member. She touched many families through her music, whether it be through private music lessons, community and school concerts, accompanying soloists or playing at weddings and funerals.

Edith never forgot her Cape Breton roots. She took her children for 2 weeks every summer to visit her family in Florence and to pick those cherished Cape Breton blueberries. Edith also treasured her family. In the summer of 2011, as the oldest grandchild of the Clan Wallace, she presented her memories of her mother’s family at their first re-union. It was a treasured event for Edith.

Edith is survived by her children Trudy, Isobel (Micheal) and Donald (Jayne), by her grandchildren Peter (Jennifer), Carolyn, Tricia, Ray, Kurt and by her special great grandson Evan. She is also survived by brother Wallace (Adelaide) and sisters-in-law Harriet King and Pauline MacLeod. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Edith was predeceased by Louis, her loving husband of 50 years, by her parents and by her brother John King. She is also predeceased by brothers-in-law Elmer (Florrie) and David MacLeod, and sister-in-law Margaret (Bryer) Jones.
