Marie Leona Murphy

The death occurred at  the Summerset Manor, Summerside on Thursday February 20, 2014 of  Marie Leona (Griffin) Murphy of Summerside and  formerly of Clermont, aged 96 years.

Born in Glengary Lot 7 on February 13, 1918 daughter of the late John Albert  and Alma (Howard) Griffin. Following her mother's early death, her father moved to the United States for work, and Marie and her older sister Verna were brought up in the household of their grandparents Robert and Catherine Howard, Cape Wolfe.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Gerald Murphy, her sister Verna nee Griffin (the late Alan Murphy), and half-brother John Griffin.  She is survived by nieces Gail (the late Ken) Murphy, of Springhill, NS and Lynn (the late Arthur Sniders) Murphy, of Halifax, NS; nephew John (Jullie Tran) Murphy of Clermont and Saint John, NB. Also by grandnieces Suzanne Murphy, Halifax, NS and Catherine Murphy (fiancé Fred McAuley) Edmonton, AB. She is also survived by numerous nieces,nephews and cousins by marriage.

 In 1939, Marie moved to Hingham, Massachusetts, where she was employed by the George and Ginny Wightman family for eighteen years.  She returned to the Island to be married in 1957.

 She loved dancing, gardening, cooking, and playing cards.  In later years she had to give up her many handiwork projects due to advancing arthritis but still enjoyed a card game and loved to have a chat.

 Resting at the Davison Funeral Home Kensington for visitation on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.  Funeral Monday, February 24 at St. Mary’s - Holy Family Church, Kensington at 10:30 a.m.Internment to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Indian River at a later date. If so desired contributions may be made  to the Cancer Society or Kidney Foundation.
