Leone Bagnall

1933-2017

Leone Bagnall

It is with saddened hearts that we, the family of Leone Bagnall, announce her passing, surrounded by the love of her family, on April 30, 2017, at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre, following a short battle with cancer. Born on July 20, 1933, she was the daughter of Sutherland and Margaret (Mayne) MacKay of Springfield. Devoted wife of the late Erroll Bagnall of Hazel Grove, and cherished mother of Elaine (Leith) Orr, Carol (Doug) Willoughby, Donna (Tim) Stanley, Lloyd (Elisse) Bagnall and John (Bethany) Bagnall. Loving grandmother of Michael (Kimberly) Orr, Jeremy Orr (Dave Justice), Scott (Kim) Willoughby, Marisa Willoughby, Vanessa Stanley (Brodie MacNevin), Sarah Stanley, Brandon (Ashley) Bagnall, Justin (Brittany) Bagnall, Jason and Jaxon Bagnall and great grandsons, Easton and Jax Bagnall.

Lovingly remembered by sisters, Lena (Bobby) MacKay, Marjorie (Jim) Ramsay and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Leone loved her family above all else, and she took great pride in their accomplishments. She also loved her community, province and its people, leading her to become a teacher and later a politician. She spent many years striving to improve the lives of her fellow Islanders, inspiring and touching many people. She served as Minister of Education and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, and was the first female Leader of the Official Opposition of any province in Canada. Among her many accomplishments, she was the recipient of the Order of Canada, the Order of Prince Edward Island and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.

Always modest and unassuming, she selflessly gave of her time, volunteering and supporting countless organizations throughout her province right up until her passing. Leone was a devoted member of Central Queens United Church, serving in many capacities for over 60 years and will be remembered for her strong faith in God. She believed life can be full of unexpected things, either happy or sad; but no matter what happens, by keeping a loving heart, a wise mind and a strong faith in God, He would always be with her through all the journeys of her life.
